Part 1: Quick & Easy Checks
Simple steps that fix or diagnose the problem in many cases.
Restart Your Router
- Turn off your router and modem.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Turn them back on.
- Allow a few minutes for them to fully restart.
Check Other Devices
- Test WiFi on another device.
- If it’s slow on all devices, the issue is likely with your network or ISP.
- If it’s only slow on one device, the issue is with that device.
Run a Speed Test
- Use a wired connection for the most accurate test.
- Try speedtest.net or fast.com.
- Compare the results to your plan speeds.
Check WiFi Signal Strength
- Move closer to your router.
- Weak signal = slow speeds.
- Aim for at least -67 dBm (Excellent/Good).
Reduce Interference
- Keep your router away from:
– Microwaves
– Bluetooth devices
– Cordless phones
– Baby monitors
– Thick walls / metal objects
Check for Data Heavy Usage
- 4K streaming, large downloads, online gaming and backups use lots of bandwidth.
- Pause downloads or streaming and test again
Update Router Firmware
- Outdated firmware can cause performance problems.
- Log in to your router and check for updates.
Part 2: Intermediate & Advanced steps
Deeper checks to solve more complex issues.
Check Your Internet Plan
- Make sure your plan matches your needs.
- Contact your ISP if speeds are consistently low.
Change the WiFi Channel
- Use a WiFi analyzer app (e.g. WiFi Analyzer).
- Choose a less crowded channel (1, 6 or 11 on 2.4GHz).
Switch to 5GHz (If Available)
- 5GHz is faster and less crowded.
- Ideal for streaming, gaming and large downloads.
Optimize Router Placement
- Place your router:
– In a central location
– Elevated, not on floor
– Away from walls and obstructions
Limit Connected Devices
- Too many devices can slow WiFi.
- Disconnect devices you’re not using.
Use Ethernet for Important Devices
- Connect gaming PCs, streaming devices or work PCs via Ethernet.
- Provides the fastest and most stable connection.
Enable QoS (Quality of Service)
- Prioritize important traffic like gaming, video calls or streaming.
- Found in your router settings.
Check for Malware
- Malware can use your internet in the background.
- Run a full scan with your antivirus.
