Part 1: How to find large files Quickly & Easily
These Built-in Windows tools are fast and simple to use.
Use File Explorer Sort by Size
- Open File Explorer.
- Go to the drive you want to scan (usually C:).
- Click in the search box and type: size:>1GB
- Press Enter.
- Click the Size column to sort from largest to smallest.
Use Storage Sense
- Go to Settings > System > Storage.
- Click Storage Sense.
- Click “Show more categories”.
- Review the list of large files and folders.
Use This PC Properties
- Open This PC.
- Right-click your drive (usually C:).
- Select Properties.
- Click “Disk Cleanup” to find large files.
Use Search Operators
- size: >1GB (files over 1GB)
- size: >500MB (files over 500MB)
- size: >100MB (files over 100MB)
- kind: video (find videos)
- kind: picture (find images)
Check Downloads Folder
- Open Downloads folder.
- Click Size column.
- Look for large files you no longer need.

Use TreeSize Free
- Download TreeSize Free from the official website.
- Install and run the program.
- Select your drive.
- See a detailed breakdown of the largest folders and files.
Use WinDirStat
- Download WinDirStat from the official website.
- Run the scan on your drive.
- The treemap shows exactly where space is being used.
Use Command prompt (Advanced)
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
- Run the forfiles command to list files larger than 1GB.
- Change the size value (in bytes) if needed.
Use PowerShell
- Open PowerShell as Administrator.
- Run the command to list files larger than 1GB.
- Results are sorted from largest to smallest.
Search in Specific Locations
Focus on Locations that Usually contain large files:
- C:UsersYourNameVideos
- C:UsersYourNameDownloads
- C:UsersYourNamePictures
- C:Program Files
Check Cloud Sync Folders
Check folders like:
- OneDrive
- Google Drive
- Dropbox
Large synced files can consume a lot of space.
