Part 1: QUICK & NOVICE STEPS

Simple steps anyone can do in minutes to free up some space.

Check Storage Usage

Go to Settings > System > Storage to see what’s using the most space.

Run Disk Cleanup

Search “Disk Cleanup”, select your drive, choose items to delete, and click OK.

Empty the recycle Bin

Right-click the Recycle Bin on your desktop and choose Empty Recycle Bin.

Delete Temporary Files

Go to settings > System > Storage > Temporary files, select items and click Remove files.

Uninstall unneeded Apps

Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, Uninstall apps you don’t use.

Move or Delete Large Files

Check your Downloads, Documents, Videos and delete or move large files you no longer need.

Part 2: ADVANCED & INTERMEDIATE STEPS

Deeper cleaning for more space.

Use Storage Sense

Go to Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense. Turn it on and click Run Storage Sense now. 

Clean System Files

In Disk Cleanup, go to the more Options tab and click Clean up under both sections to remove old restore points and unused programs.

Move Personal Files

Move large folders to an external drive or cloud storage (OneDrive, Google Drive, etc.) or change their location.

Manage OneDrive Files

Right-click the OneDrive icon > Settings > Settings tab. Use “Free up space” or enable Files On-Demand.

Delete Old Windows Updates

In Disk Cleanup, select “Windows Update Cleanup”. This can free several GB.

Clear Browser Data & Cache

In your browser settings, clear cache, cookies and download history regularly.

Disable Hibernation (If Not Used)

Opens an elevated Command Prompt and type: powercfg -h off

This can free up several GB of space.

Use Compact OS (Windows 11 Pro)

Run from an elevated Command prompt: compact.exe / compactos:always
